Charlotte was made by Charles Laidlaw for his daughter Connie, a student at Runnymede Collegiate in Toronto who at the age of 16 performed for the troops during the second world war in the all-girl troupe: The Victory Entertainers. She was donated to Open Door Designs by Kay Westlake who also performed in the group. Charlotte will be added to the collection at the National War Museum soon.

The group, Connie Laidlaw, Kay Westlake, Phyllis Moore and Eva Elliott performed over 300 army camp shows in Canada and the U.S. during the war. A great piece of Canadian history and a fabulous example of Girl Power!

Once again, we had a full house for Puppet Allsorts' Slam & Fundraiser. Have you ever seen so many puppet theatres in one place?

Thanks to everyone that came out to support the performers and to help the series continue in 2013-14. We are currently scheduling the next season and will be posting the list of performers soon. Start working on your pieces for next year!

Thanks from Toronto Puppetry Collective

Amy Macfarlane gave a shout-out to the Junction Triangle and Open Door Designs in the new July edition of Today's Parent Magazine: "In this charming store, Joanne Bigham sells her own collection of hand puppets..." Thanks Amy! (click on the image for a closer look)

Lin Liu-Hsin Puppet Theatre Museum - Taipei
Dr. Paul C.F. Lin, founder of the Taiyuan Arts and Culture Foundation and a relentless promoter of Taiwanese culture, established the TTT Puppet Centre together with its director Dr. Robin Ruizendaal in 2000. From its very first days, the Centre has been at the very forefront of traditional puppet theatre in Taiwan organizing both exhibitions at the Centre while, simultaneously, pushing the art to new vistas and new modes of performances.

The aims of the Museum is dedication to preserve and promote traditional Asian puppet culture, to become a puppet educational center, as well as provide a stage for puppetry from all of the Asia-Pacific area and promote interactions between local and international puppet troupes.

The National Marionette Theater is owned and operated by the Syrotiak family of Brattleboro, VT. Each year this remarkable company travels some forty-five thousand miles across the USA performing for many different types of venues from elementary schools and theaters, to libraries, summer camps and outdoor fairs and festivals.

This video from Handspring Puppet Company was made for the Warhorse performers. Valuable for all performers though methinks.

RED WAGON COLLECTIVE: DONATIONS NEEDED:
fabric, wool, embroidery floss, needles, crochet hooks, old sweaters

RED WAGON COLLECTIVE was formed in 2006 in response to our desire to deepen our artistic, collaborative, and community-engaged practices through residency projects that would enable us to develop both intensive and extensive relationships in the Junction - a rapidly changing neighbourhood in Toronto's west end. We share a desire to work collaboratively with artists and non-artists to create work that inspires new conversations; softens boundaries between groups separated by age, culture, ability, and economic status; promotes the presence of art in everyday life and contributes to increasing public engagement in community development. The work we create with communities is used in producing exhibitions, public installations, and celebratory performance events. We are currently working within the walls of the Evangeline Shelter.

Image Foundry specializes in edition printing, custom art reproduction projects, and high-end photo-retouching work.
