Now in the Window
on the road to nowhere - me, me burro and an excited parrot
IT WAS A PACKED HOUSE!

Thank you firstly to the fabulous Frank Meschkuleit who put this show together including bringing in Marty and Roula. I bet the audience was wondering what had hit them...the reviews received have been unanimous - wow! In my awe of Marty's performance and the fact that I was on lighting (ha ha ha) I missed taking ANY shots of the first part of his performance...if anyone has any please send them to me and I'll add them to the slide show. I also missed photographing the fact that it was a sellout crowd...trust me...it was a sellout crowd!

So, the final show of the season is the SLAM on June 17th...ALL performers are welcome - and of course any audience. Get your tickets soon! The line-up is beginning to flesh out. There will be a stage manager to herd the catz... We also welcome volunteers (you get to see the show for free!) please contact me if you are interested: info@opendoordesigns.ca

The Daisy Theatre

Created and Performed by Ronnie Burkett

A talking cow, a faded vamp, a wistful fairy and the most beloved and befuddled prairie farm wife in Canada are a few of the outrageous characters in Ronnie Burkett’s new show, The Daisy Theatre. Inspired by the illegal underground “daisy” puppet shows of Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia, and the beginnings of cabaret at the famed Le Chat Noir in Paris, The Daisy Theatre blends nightly improvisation, variety acts and music, monologues and morality tales, plus new short playlets by ten Canadian playwrights written for the resident company of over 30 marionettes. Each performance will be different, daring, ridiculous and on the edge, in the hands of renowned puppeteer and provocateur Ronnie Burkett. No two performances of The Daisy Theatrewill be the same, making this is a show to see more than once.

This production includes mature content. Suitable for audiences 14+

A little video by friend of Open Door Designs, Chris Macdonald.
In May 2011 Steve Golden from the International Puppetry Museum told me that they had had a visit from Francisco Sanz's granddaughter and that she was hoping to make a film. Here is her grandfather's film now available for viewing online

This is a magical story...the puppets pictured below were donated from the Toronto Public Library. I knew I had to find the right place for these beautifully rendered characters...after contacting the Centre for Indigenous Theatre who was doing their own outreach Po'taina (Mike) Healy walked into the store! He is an actor, dancer and storyteller and very interested in working with puppets...a perfect match. Maybe he'll be ready to perform in the next Allsorts Season!?

TheTPL had no provenance for these puppets...if anyone out there recognizes them I would appreciate hearing from you about what you know - it would be good to credit the artist(s) and learn some history about them.

These puppets were brought into the store recenlty. I believe they are German, 19thC - most of the costumes are not original but the carving is beautiful. Again, if anyone knows anything about them or would like to purchase them please let me know (I do not have them on site so will have to arrange connection. info@opendoordesigns.ca)

Our neighbourhood now has a traffic plan and the city is asking for input. Please take a look at the proposal and respond with any of your concerns.

RED WAGON COLLECTIVE: DONATIONS NEEDED:
fabric, wool, embroidery floss, needles, crochet hooks, old sweaters

RED WAGON COLLECTIVE was formed in 2006 in response to our desire to deepen our artistic, collaborative, and community-engaged practices through residency projects that would enable us to develop both intensive and extensive relationships in the Junction - a rapidly changing neighbourhood in Toronto's west end. We share a desire to work collaboratively with artists and non-artists to create work that inspires new conversations; softens boundaries between groups separated by age, culture, ability, and economic status; promotes the presence of art in everyday life and contributes to increasing public engagement in community development. The work we create with communities is used in producing exhibitions, public installations, and celebratory performance events. We are currently working within the walls of the Evangeline Shelter.

Image Foundry specializes in edition printing, custom art reproduction projects, and high-end photo-retouching work.
