I would like to thank Louise Lapointe and her crew for making Casteliers 2014 such a wonderful event, which along with all the wonderful performances from around the world, included a mini-mart of Quebec puppet companies; a preview of four works in progress and the opportunity to meet programmers from Quebec, Ontario and the US - it was a wonderful immersion. The performances took place in several venues and in the most beautiful Theatre Outremont. We came home tired but very happy and with lots of ideas for Puppet Allsorts future festival.

Next year is the 10th Anniversary of this marvellous festival- We recommend you put it on your list for 2015! Look for a reminder here!

Children’s entertainers Soli & Rob lead the audience in an interactive sing-along concert with their puppet friends Alistair Ant, Lilly-Mae the Butterfly and Sluggo – collectively known as “The Bug Buddies”. Touted by Toronto Life magazine as “One of Toronto’s biggest names in Pint-sized entertainment” and past winner of the Parent’s Choice Award for children’s entertainers (City Parent Magazine), Soli & Rob have a knack for putting on that rare show that leaves adults and kids smiling for the same reason – it’s great entertainment.

big bird at hot docs - April 28-May 4
I Am Big Bird tells the extraordinary story of Caroll Spinney, the whimsical and endearing man behind Sesame Street’s beloved Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch. While inspiring generations of kids for more than 40 years, not much has been known about the man inside the bird. Now, with Spinney approaching 80, we get to peek at how the magic was made. With an epic love story, a life-changing adventure in China and an almost-trip to space aboard the Challenger, both Caroll Spinney and his feathered friend Big Bird have had some incredible adventures and tragedies. Through an extensive collection of home movies and behind-the-scenes Sesame Street footage, the filmmakers capture an intimate portrait. If your heart warmed to the big yellow bird that entertained generations, your heart will melt in this loving portrait of the creative genius who brought him to life. MORE INFO

Theatre Direct, Ontario, Canada
May 15th – May 18th, 2014 at Alliance Française de Toronto

Puppetry, minimal language
Themes of friendship, the natural world, and adjusting to change are explored in this piece, as well as, communication without words.

Théâtre Puzzle, Québec, Canada
May 13th – May 14th, 2014 at Alliance Française de Toronto

Two puppeteers transform the ubiquitous plastic bag into theatrical magic with primitive and very hungry plastic bag creatures that have the audience in stitches with their antics. Performed with minimal language to a percussive score created by the snapping, crinkling and whooshing of the plastic. Over the course of the performance, the world of the play fills with plastic, and our laughter becomes reflective as we consider how much plastic fills our world.

The mechanical automaton sits in the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, PA, writing his three poems in intricate, scrolling cursive as he has since Charles Penniman first set eyes on him over 75 years ago. Penniman was six or seven years old then, he remembers, and was instantly transfixed by the way the revolving brass discs made the boy move with fluid, lifelike movements. Now 85, Penniman is the boy's caretaker, and passes on the mechanism's secrets to the next generation.

RED WAGON COLLECTIVE: DONATIONS NEEDED:

RED WAGON COLLECTIVE was formed in 2006 in response to our desire to deepen our artistic, collaborative, and community-engaged practices through residency projects that would enable us to develop both intensive and extensive relationships in the Junction - a rapidly changing neighbourhood in Toronto's west end. We share a desire to work collaboratively with artists and non-artists to create work that inspires new conversations; softens boundaries between groups separated by age, culture, ability, and economic status; promotes the presence of art in everyday life and contributes to increasing public engagement in community development. The work we create with communities is used in producing exhibitions, public installations, and celebratory performance events. We are currently working within the walls of the Evangeline Shelter.
