Crazy
to Kill
Friday, November 11, 2011
Saturday, November 12, 2011
Can no one stop the murderer who is stalking the dim halls of
the Elmhurst, a private southwestern Ontario asylum? What is
the nature of the relationship between Detective Fry and “model
patient” Agatha Lawson? What is the significance of the
life-sized dolls Lawson creates as part of her rehabilitation?
Will the madness never end?
Come see the long-awaited Toronto premiere of the piece with
a star-studded cast, and 18 puppets, representing the staff
and guests of Elmhurst. Home-grown mystery, gory intrigue, affecting
characterization and a brilliantly inventive musical score:
Crazy to Kill is a work of great depth and beauty that will
have you on the edge of your seat!

You need to play with puppets every now and again or you become
sad and your fur loses it's shine... UNRAKU is once again hosting
a wonderful, original ONE NIGHT SLAM, full of bold new acts
and exciting videos, and even some improvisation!
What's a PUPPET SLAM, you ask? Well, have you heard of a Poetry
Slam before? It's a bit like that, but less rhymey and more
fuzzy...
Please note, this is a show for mature audiences - there may
be coarse language or references to sex, death, or even rock'n'roll!
If you want to bring your kiddies, just be warned you might
need to explain some of the jokes to them, or just tell 'em
you'll explain it when they're older...

Papier
Mâché Mold Making
Last Sunday I had the privilege of actually taking one of
our workshops! Alexander Mergold is a fabulous teacher and
we learned how to build a model, prepare a mold and lay
it up with paper and all in ONE day! I can highly recommend
this workshop. Alexander taught us many ingenious techniques
that he has devised to produce molded papier mâché
parts for puppet and doll making.

THE PUPPET BIKE FROM CHICAGO
THIS
FROM WIKIPEDIA
The puppet bike concept was created by
artist and inventor Jason Trusty. The bike itself consists of
a large custom-built (by Trusty and his brother Eric) tricycle
complete with a small box on the back which serves as a stage
for puppet shows. The box is brightly decorated with images
of the puppets themselves and other designs. Solar panels on
the roof help power the ghetto blaster (which provides music
for the shows), as well as fans inside the box that help cool
the performer.
The popularity
of the bike has increased to the point that Trusty has had to
turn away people interested in performing. The summer 2007 lineup
included the bipolar friend, an artist from Ontario, Canada,
bicyclists, teachers and theatre buffs. The performers keep
the majority of their earnings, while Trusty keeps a small portion
for bike maintenance.
In the summer of 2008, Trusty had planned to take the bike through
Canada to the Arctic.
The basement
studio is now finished and available for rent
for small meetings and events. A beautiful clean new space,
there is approximately 350 sq ft of floor space. 2 tables, 12
chairs, microwave, kettle, coffeemaker, fridge and bathroom.
Rates:
$15/hr - 8 hour minimum
$20/hr by the hour.
Started
just as a garden with individual plots in 2005 by the City Councillor
Adam Giambrone, it has been transformed into a thriving Community
Garden, and is now a center for Urban Agriculture. With ethnic
and lifestyle diversity, our garden is a place to grow food, flowers,
friendships, and personal social and leadership skills. READ

RED WAGON COLLECTIVE: DONATIONS
NEEDED:
fabric, wool, embroidery floss, needles, crochet hooks, old
sweaters
RED WAGON COLLECTIVE was formed in 2006 in response to our desire
to deepen our artistic, collaborative, and community-engaged
practices through residency projects that would enable us to
develop both intensive and extensive relationships in the Junction
- a rapidly changing neighbourhood in Toronto's west end. We
share a desire to work collaboratively with artists and non-artists
to create work that inspires new conversations; softens boundaries
between groups separated by age, culture, ability, and economic
status; promotes the presence of art in everyday life and contributes
to increasing public engagement in community development. The
work we create with communities is used in producing exhibitions,
public installations, and celebratory performance events. We
are currently working within the walls of the Evangeline Shelter.
